OpenMadoola is a free software (GPL v2.0 or later) reimplementation of The Wing of Madoola with bug fixes and optional gameplay enhancements. OpenMadoola was developed so people who own The Wing of Madoola on cartridge or on Steam can have more fun with their game. OpenMadoola is not a standalone game and will not function without externally supplied game data. This project is not licensed or endorsed by Sunsoft.
OpenMadoola is my attempt to make the definitive version of The Wing of Madoola. It plays just like the original game engine, but is written in C and runs natively on your computer. OpenMadoola offers numerous enhancements over the original version of the game, including:
OpenMadoola needs a copy of the original game data to function. This can either be a standard NES ROM file dumped from your cartridge, or the "sharedassets0.assets" file from SUNSOFT is Back! Retro Game Selection on Steam. If you're using the Flatpak, it will walk you through installing the game data after you install OpenMadoola. Otherwise, look at the readme file on the Github repo for where the data goes.
For more information as well as the source code and prebuilt Windows binaries, check out the OpenMadoola Github repo.
Alternatively, if you are a GNU/Linux user, you can use the Flatpak version of OpenMadoola. This lets you get automatic updates and not have to deal with manually compiling the program. Make sure to check out the information about the Flatpak version here, especially if you're installing OpenMadoola on a Steam Deck.
