■ About the classification of Sega Saturn development tools

Currently, the classification and names of Sega Saturn development tools are stipulated as follows. Tools to be released in the future will be introduced according to the following categories.

● Free loan tool
A tool that allows SEGA's property to be used under a loan agreement. Sega production tools, GNU tools, manuals, etc. It is distributed free of charge (rental) from technical support to SEGA Licensee. Support at Sega is essential.

→ SGL Tool Kit, Graphic & Sound Tools, SBL Rel6.0, SSSDK, Hitachi SH Tools

● Sega License Tool
A tool that SEGA receives a license from an external vendor and distributes to SEGA Licensee.
Sega has virtually exclusive sales rights (distribution rights) for Saturn. Support at Sega is essential. There are the following two types.

  1. Types that require royalties and notation → TrueMotion, Cinepak, QSound, YSound
  2. Type that only requires notation → CyberSound

● Official tools
A tool that literally Sega officially recognized as a development tool. SEGA will be the contact point for full support, but will provide user support in close cooperation with sales companies and vendors. Actively recommend it at technical briefings hosted by SEGA.

→ SNASM, CartDev, PRG-BOX, VCD-System, CDE-100, Mirage, SOFTIMAGE, etc.

● Corresponding tool
A tool manufactured by an external vendor that was judged to have no technical or support problems as a Saturn development tool. SEGA licenses Licensee to use the libraries or data formats provided by SEGA. Support responsibility lies with the sales company / vendor. SEGA's support is limited to the parts related to the libraries and data formats provided by SEGA.

● Other
FontWorks
→ A character font that can be used in Sega Saturn titles by purchasing it.
The terms of the license are strictly defined in the contract between Sega Licensee and FontWorks. Notation required.
